They came for coffee and stayed for the rain. The old café glowed behind its fogged windows, the tree above them wore its string lights like jewellery, and the menu — the long, serious, laminated menu — sat between them, held upside down by two people who had absolutely no intention of ordering anything.

She read the first line upside down with great solemnity. He corrected her pronunciation of something that wasn't even a word. And then they both broke — the kind of laughing that shakes your shoulders and makes strangers at other tables look over and smile without knowing why.

The rain kept falling on the leaves. The pastries sat untouched in the display case. Somewhere a bell rang as someone came in from the cold. And under the tree, in the blue hour's last soft light, two people chose the oldest, cheapest form of happiness there is: laughing together at nothing, for no reason, in a corner of the world that felt entirely theirs.
