The Story Behind This Image
Smoke from a love that burned slowly
Midnight in the park, and she is stretched out on the bench the way people lie when they have nowhere to be and no one waiting. One arm folded behind her head, eyes open to a sky she cannot see through the overcast gloom.
The marigolds are already ash
Somewhere earlier tonight, the dried marigolds from their wedding went into the fire. She watched the petals curl and blacken and thought about how something so bright could turn to smoke so quietly. The thin grey ribbon rose straight up, as if it knew exactly where it was going โ unlike her.
A lone lamp keeps vigil
The single streetlamp hums above her, the only warmth in the frame. Her black turtleneck and long coat absorb the dark; the braid over her shoulder is the one soft line in a night of hard edges. She is not crying. That part is over. This is the hour after, when letting go stops being a decision and starts being weather.
