The Story Behind This Image
Marigolds for Her Sister
She was supposed to be decorating her sister's bridal room with marigolds โ strings of orange and gold, the smell of weddings, laughter from the next room. Instead the day ended and she walked alone to the deserted beach, because joy has a way of stirring up the sediment of everything you have not dealt with, and today the sediment was hers.
Serene at the Waterline
The flowing white dress moves in the sea wind, her messy bun loosening strand by strand, and she stands with her back to the camera looking over one shoulder at the sun sinking into the water. The golden-hour backlight throws a flare across the frame like a signature. She is not sad, exactly. She is serene the way the sea is serene โ vast, moving, holding everything without being held by anything.
Tears and tenderness are not opposites; they are neighbours, and tonight they share a fence. She lets the marigold-orange of the sunset stain her cheeks, breathes in the salt, and turns back toward the wedding house with its strings of flowers. Her sister gets married tomorrow. Tonight, the beach gets her.
