The Story Behind This Image
"Soon" was three hours ago
She bought the flowers at noon, bright and tight-budded. Now they sit wilting in her lap, petals softening at the edges, the way promises soften when they are kept too long. She is perched on a rooftop ledge above the old Palace Cinema, legs dangling over the edge, an oversized beige sweater soaked at the shoulders, wet hair dark against her face.
Below her, the city does its evening thing — roofs, wires, a far-off train — all of it moving, all of it going somewhere, while she stays.
The arithmetic of waiting
Waiting has its own time. A watched clock doesn't move; a wilting flower keeps its own cruel ledger. She isn't crying. Crying would mean accepting the shape of this, and she hasn't — she is still in the part where "soon" is a word that means something.
Dramatic side-light finds her profile against the gloom, the cinema's faded sign behind her like a marquee for a film that never started. She holds the flowers a little tighter. Soon. Soon is still, technically, a possibility.
