The Story Behind This Image
Overwhelmed at her own graduation, looking for her parents
Blue hour, moonlight through cloud, rain on an empty path. She walks away from the camera in an oversized beige sweater and jeans, messy bun coming loose, stray strands stuck to her wet neck — a graduate's day, technically. The degree is real. The job offers are real. And all she can think, walking home in the rain past the bus stop she has used for four years, is: I wish they were here to see this. She turns her head, just slightly, toward something that isn't there. The biggest days are the ones that make the missing people loudest.
Aching, at full achievement
Tears and tenderness, aching — because success without witnesses is a strange, hollow thing. She did everything right. She is supposed to be happy. And she is, in a way — but happiness with an asterisk, happiness that keeps looking over its shoulder for the two people who sacrificed for it and aren't here to collect. The moon watches. The rain keeps time. She keeps walking, because that is what they would have told her to do.
The loneliest walk home
Blue hour with moonlight and deep shadows, wet path reflecting the sky, the bus stop a small lonely shelter behind her — the frame is all going-away. Shot from behind, because some feelings you can only show by not showing the face. Her hands hang empty at her sides. The degree is in a tube under her arm, getting damp. It doesn't matter. They would have been proud anyway.
