The Story Behind This Image
Tear-stained pages
The beach cafe was nearly empty — drizzle on the windows, waves grey beyond the sand, her iced coffee going watery and forgotten. She sat with her chin near her hands, messy bun coming undone, staring past the rain at something only she could see. On the table: nothing. In her head: everything.
The childhood diaries lived in a trunk at her parents' house, their pages tear-stained in at least three places she could name. She didn't need to open them. She'd re-read them so many times the words had moved in permanently.
The weather inside
Wistful is the climate of this frame — inside and out. The drizzle, the grey sea, the cold coffee: all of it just weather for the real storm, which was memory. The diary entries. The handwriting getting braver year by year. The girl she was, writing to the woman she became.
She sat very still, and the rain kept time, and somewhere between the pages, the two of them — then and now — finally met.
