The Story Behind This Image
Unnoticed, on purpose
He sits on a rooftop ledge above a deserted beach at dusk, in a navy sweater over a collared shirt, messy hair catching the dramatic side light, gazing out at the sea and the headland beyond. The story says sitting on the last bench of a packed local train, completely unnoticed โ and this ledge is the same feeling, outdoors: a man surrounded by a world that is not looking at him, and finding, in that invisibility, a strange electric charge.
Electric, because nobody is watching
Being unnoticed is usually described as sad. This photograph disagrees. There is an electricity to the moment when no one is watching: you can think your real thoughts, feel your real feelings, and sit exactly the way you want to sit, without arranging yourself for an audience. The side light carves his profile out of the dusk like a signal, and the sea keeps its own counsel below.
He is not waiting to be noticed. He is enjoying the current that runs through a person when the crowd finally looks away.
