The Story Behind This Image
Coffee Gone Cold
The iced coffee sweats in her hands. She has been holding it for forty minutes without taking a sip — the straw untouched, the ice long melted, the whole thing a watery metaphor she is too tired to appreciate. Across the river, the old stone bridge catches the last of the sun, and the rain keeps falling through the light like the sky can't decide what it wants to be.
She stood outside his building for an hour this evening. She knows which window is his. She watched the curtain move and refused — absolutely refused — to look up, because looking up would have been asking, and she is done asking. So she walked here instead, to this cafe by the water, to sit in the rain and not-drink her coffee and be the main character of nobody's story.
Denim Against the Downpour
The denim jacket is damp at the shoulders. Under it, the floral dress he once said made her look like spring. Her braid hangs heavy with rain over one shoulder, dripping onto the wooden table. The golden-hour backlight catches every raindrop as it falls past the railing, and for one suspended moment the whole world is lens flare and river mist and a girl who chose herself.
