The Story Behind This Image
Every Stall, Every Fest
The title says he volunteers for every single college fest stall. The photograph shows the volunteer after hours — a young man in a navy sweater, knees drawn up, arms wrapped around his legs, sitting on a rooftop in the drizzle at midnight, the sleeping city lights spread below. The fest is over. The stalls are packed away. She went home hours ago, probably with someone else, probably laughing. He is still here, on the roof, holding his knees like they might hold him back.
Melancholic Above the City
Melancholic is the mood, and the rooftop provides the altitude for it. The drizzle beads on his sweater; the city glitters without him, a million lit windows each containing a life that is not his. He volunteered for the ticket counter, the food stall, the decoration committee — every post that put him near her for five more minutes.
The Volunteer Economy
One-sided love runs on a volunteer economy: unpaid hours, invisible labour, no recognition, and you keep showing up. The photograph does not mock him for it. It sits on the wet rooftop with him, in the drizzle, and lets the city do the talking. Somewhere down there, she is asleep, unaware that a whole festival was secretly organised around her smile. He would do it again. He will do it again. That is the economy.
