The Story Behind This Image
Staring at the Ceiling
The room is old — cracked ceiling, peeling walls, a window onto a lane that smells of rain and frying pakoras. She lies on the bed in her grey hoodie, one arm behind her head, messy bun coming undone, and stares at the ceiling like it's showing a film only she can see.
The light rain ticks against the window. The lane murmurs below. She is seventeen kinds of tired and none of them are about sleep.
The Dark Terrace
Some nights she climbs to the dark terrace, wraps herself in her grandmother's shawl, and watches the city lights flicker — a thousand windows, a thousand lives, all of them lit and none of them hers. Watching city lights flicker from her dark terrace, wrapped in a shawl: it's her favourite and least favourite hour.
Her own quiet world has rooms: this bed, that terrace, the space behind her eyes. Tonight she's visiting the ceiling room. The film up there is still playing. She's in no hurry for the credits.
