The Story Behind This Image
One hour at the restaurant door
The host has stopped asking if she wants to order. She smiles and says a little longer, like she is not counting the minutes, like the empty chair across the reserved table is not the loudest thing in the room. She has been watching the door for an hour. She will watch it for one more.
A doorway in the fog
She stands half in shadow in a doorway on a fog-wrapped old-city lane, a pastel salwar-kameez with a soft dupatta, her long braid resting over one shoulder. A lantern burns behind her, candles warming the dark doorway, while dense fog swallows the lane beyond. Somewhere out there, footsteps could be anyone's. She hopes they are his.
Bittersweet patience
Waiting an hour for someone who may be late — or may never come — is the bravest small thing a person can do. Her face holds both outcomes at once: the sweet of arrival, the bitter of the alternative. The fog does not answer. She stays anyway.
