The Story Behind This Image
The seat beside him stays empty
The metro was full this morning — shoulder to shoulder, phone screens glowing, someone's tiffin leaking the smell of achaar. Through all of it, the seat beside him stayed empty. Not by design. Just by some unspoken agreement the universe keeps making with him lately: *not yet, not yours.*
He skipped the second metro and walked to this old cafe instead. Charcoal blazer, black turtleneck, a cold coffee he ordered hot. The window is fogged; dawn is doing something pale and unconvincing behind it. He draws nothing in the condensation. He just watches the fog move, the way you watch a thought you don't want to finish.
Serene, with an empty chair
Serene is loneliness after it stops fighting. He doesn't scroll. He doesn't sigh dramatically. He sits with the empty chair across the table like it's an old colleague — familiar, undemanding, occasionally funny in a dry way. The empty seat on the metro. The empty chair at the cafe. He has stopped asking the universe for company and started keeping the company of the quiet.
The coffee goes cold. The fog lifts a fraction. And somewhere in the day ahead, another seat will stay empty beside him — and he'll sit down anyway, unhurried, at peace with the architecture of being alone.
