The Story Behind This Image
Crying-Laughing on the Midnight Sand
Nobody plans to end up on a deserted beach at midnight surrounded by old letters. But the sister's surprise visit did something to her — walked in with that grin and a bag of midnight snacks, and suddenly the whole carefully-managed year came undone in the best possible way. They talked until 11. They laughed until it hurt. And then the laughing turned into crying, the way it does when a heart is too full, and she needed air, and the beach was right there.
Now she sits cross-legged on the cold sand in her denim jacket over the floral dress, her messy bun coming undone, stray strands whipping in the sea wind. Old letters are scattered around her — she brought them down here meaning to read one, then got distracted by the moon, then by the waves, then by the sheer ridiculous tenderness of being alive. A tear slides down her cheek, and she is smiling at the same time. Crying-laughing. The best and worst feeling there is.
The moon hangs huge and white over the dark water. The sand is cold under her palms. Her hands are empty — no phone, no tissue, nothing to fix this with, because nothing needs fixing. Some nights the heart just overflows: gratitude and grief and love and exhaustion, all sitting cross-legged on the same beach, all lit by the same moon.
She'll go back inside soon. Her sister will be asleep on the couch. The letters will wait. But for now, she sits in the moonlight, crying and laughing at nothing and everything, tenderly, completely, alive.
