The Story Behind This Image
The dance before the street
She was dancing alone in her room, fairy lights on. Just now — ten minutes ago, maybe. Her favourite song, the one with the drum break at 2:14. She danced the whole thing, badly and completely, the way you dance when no one is watching and the fairy lights are the only audience that matters.
The street after
Now she sits on the kerb of a rain-soaked city street, knees drawn up, arms wrapped around her legs. A flowing white summer dress, a long braid over one shoulder, rain beading on the fabric. Overcast gloom; golden-hour glow diffusing through the rain; shopfronts and an auto-rickshaw blurring amber behind her. Her own quiet world.
Melancholic, the mood says. The dance is over; the street is here. But the fairy lights are still on in her room, and the song is still playing in her head, and the rain on her braid is just percussion. Some melancholy is just joy catching its breath between songs.
