The Story Behind This Image
One umbrella on platform three
The rain drums on the station roof and runs off the edges in sheets. They walk the length of the empty platform under a single black umbrella — she holds it, tilted toward him; his arm rests on her shoulder. Behind them, the PLATFORM 3 sign glows through the rain, benches sit empty, and candles burn in lanterns along the wet concrete.
He's in a navy sweater over a collared shirt, hair damp and going wild again. She's in an oversized beige knit sweater and jeans, holding the umbrella like it's the most important job in the world. Which, tonight, it is.
The wistfulness of the empty platform
There's a wistful mood to this frame that comes from the setting more than the couple. An empty railway platform at night is a place built for departures, and here are two people who aren't departing — just walking, slowly, under one umbrella, in no hurry to reach the end and turn around.
The candlelight pools around the lanterns and reflects off the wet concrete. The rain falls in the dark beyond the roof's edge. And the two of them walk through the middle of it, shoulders touching, the umbrella arcing above like a small black sky.
Reading to each other
Some stories are told in words; some are told in the tilt of an umbrella, the weight of an arm on a shoulder, the slow walk down an empty platform in the rain. This is one of the second kind.
