The Story Behind This Image
The Dark Room
There is a room he goes to that has no address. It is not the flat — the flat is fine, the flat has windows. This room is interior: four walls of the things he does not say, lit only by the thin light that gets in around the edges of his own resolve. He has been sitting in it for weeks. Today, for the first time, he stood up and walked to the doorway.
He stands half in shadow in the old stone doorway, black hoodie, dark jeans, hair neatly combed — the armour of a man who has decided to look like he is fine until he is. Behind him, the misty forest path dissolves into drizzle and grey. In front of him: the dark room, the pieces on the floor, the whole beautiful wreckage. He is not leaving it. Not yet. He is just standing in the doorway — the exact line between staying broken and starting to mend.
Serene, his face is — not happy, not healed, but level. The drizzle beads on the stone. The forest keeps its green counsel. And a young man stands in a doorway in the middle of nowhere, half in shadow, half in the grey light of a late evening, doing the hardest thing a broken heart can do: nothing dramatic, just standing there, letting the light in.
What the Frame Holds
