The Story Behind This Image
The Window Between
She stands at the rain-streaked window of the rooftop room, one hand pressed flat against the glass, and looks out over the sleeping city. Her maroon anarkali falls in soft folds; her loose hair lifts in the breeze from the half-open pane. Below, the wet streets hold the city's lights like scattered coins.
Cupping the Flame
Somewhere behind her, a small diya burns on the sill — the flame she has been guarding all evening, cupping it each time the wind leans in. It is a fragile thing, that flame, and so is the hope it stands for. Dawn is coming pale through the fog, and with it the oldest question: will today be the day he comes home? Her fingers leave a small clear patch on the fogged glass, a window within the window.
Fragile, and Still Burning
The city doesn't answer. The rain keeps drawing its slow lines down the pane. But the diya hasn't gone out — not once, not all night — and neither has she. Her hand stays on the glass a moment longer, warm against the cold, keeping vigil for whoever the morning might bring.
