The Story Behind This Image
Two Coffees Going Cold
She ordered two. That was the first mistake, or the last act of faith — she can never decide which. The second cup sits across from her, steaming less with every minute, its surface filming over like a small grey lake. She wraps her hands around her own cup and watches the rain thread the air outside the abandoned cinema hall.
The grey hoodie is damp at the shoulders; loose open hair sticks to her cheeks in the breeze that leaks through the broken doorway. The old CINEMA sign hangs crooked above the entrance like a punchline nobody laughs at anymore. She chose this place because it was theirs — third row, left side, always. Hope is just nostalgia wearing a nicer coat.
The Arithmetic of Late
There is a precise mathematics to waiting. Fifteen minutes is traffic. Forty-five is a story. Two hours is a decision somebody else made. She is past the arithmetic now, into the country beyond numbers, where the second coffee going cold is not evidence but atmosphere — a still life of almost.
She will finish her own cup. She will leave the other one full, as an offering or a reproach, she has not decided. Outside, the rain keeps its own counsel, and the pale dawn light pushes through the fog like it is looking for someone too.
