The Story Behind This Image
Every Pair of Headlights
She leans against the weathered wall by the park bench, head tilted down, the oversized beige sweater swallowing her hands. The long braid over her shoulder is damp. It is dawn, overcast and grey, and the sodium streetlamp is still burning โ a small orange sun refusing to go out. Every time headlights sweep the dark lane, she stands up. Every single time. And every time, it is not him.
Hope That Stays, Bittersweet
She has stopped feeling embarrassed about it. The standing up, the sitting back down. Hope is not dignified; it never was. It is a woman in a borrowed sweater standing up for headlights that are never his, and sitting back down, and doing it again, because the alternative โ not standing up โ would mean he had already stopped coming, and she is not ready to live in that world yet.
The lamp buzzes. Another car passes. She stands. It is not him. She sits. The sweater is warm. The morning will come. He might come with it.
